Fall is one of my favorite times to paddle — the crowds are gone, the colors are changing, and the water takes on this moody calm that makes every stroke feel a little more intentional. But with that beauty comes the challenge of staying warm, dry, and comfortable when the rain starts to fall and the temps drop.

In my latest video, Fall Paddling in the Rain – My Go-To Gear for Staying Dry & Happy, I break down the cold-weather paddling kit that keeps me out on the water no matter the forecast. Here’s a quick rundown of what I’m wearing and why it works.

My Fall Paddling Kit

~Level Six Juneau Semi-Dry Top: This is the heart of my rain setup. The Juneau keeps wind and water out while still being breathable enough for active paddling. It’s not as sealed-off as a full dry top, but it’s perfect for touring paddling when full immersion protection isn’t as critical. The adjustable neoprene neck gasket and latex wrists give it just the right balance of comfort and protection.

~Level Six Monty Neoprene-Lined Shorts:These shorts are an underrated piece of gear for cool, wet conditions. The Monty’s neoprene lining adds insulation and helps block wind chill, while still allowing freedom of movement. Great for paddling in shoulder seasons or summer when the water is cold.

~Wool Base Layer: I always start with a light merino or wool top under my semi-dry gear. It’s warm even when damp, resists odor, and breathes beautifully during long sessions. If you’re layering synthetics instead, make sure to avoid cotton — it’ll hold moisture and chill you fast.

~Neoprene Booties: Cold feet can ruin a paddle faster than anything. These booties keep my feet comfortable even after getting them wet on launching and landing.

~Reed ChillCheater Spray Skirt: Rounding out the kit is my Reed ChillCheater skirt — simple, lightweight, and waterproof. It sheds rain beautifully and helps keep the cockpit warm and dry no matter what the rain or waves decide to do.

Why I Love Paddling in the Rain

There’s something peaceful about being out on the water when most people stay home. The sound of rain hitting the surface, the mist rising off the lake, and the solitude make it feel like the whole world slows down. With the right gear, it’s not uncomfortable — it’s magic.

So don’t pack away your kayak when the weather turns. Gear up, dress smart, and embrace the beauty of paddling through the rain.
