Lets talk Ultralight Sit On Tops

This week, we delve into a comparison of three lightweight Thermoformed 10' Sit on Top kayaks. We're looking at the Eddyline Caribbean 10, the Hurricane Skimmer 106, and the Hurricane Osprey 109. Here are the specifications for each. Each kayak occupies a unique niche in the market and is designed with a specific paddler in mind. Let's explore these kayaks in detail to help you decide which one suits your needs best! But first, here are the stats.

Small But Mighty| Ultralight Pocket Sized Caribbean 10

This kayak has been in development for years. Following the enthusiastic reception Eddyline received with the first two sit-on-tops, the Caribbean 12 and Caribbean 14, smaller paddlers requested a compact 10' version. The Caribbean 10 was created as the sit-on-top equivalent to the Sky 10, specifically designed for smaller paddlers with its lightweight and easy-to-transport nature. It's compact enough to fit in many SUVs, yet offers enough performance to keep up with others during local club paddles. This kayak is ideal for those seeking an easily manageable option both on and off the water. However, there are some limitations. When they say it's designed for small paddlers, they mean it. With a capacity of only 200 lbs and very short foot pedals, this kayak is suitable only for individuals with a 28" or shorter inseam. If you are around 5'8" or shorter and weigh 175 lbs or less, you'll be pleasantly surprised by how well it tracks and glides through the water.

High Performance In a Small Package | Ultralight Skimmer 106

The Skimmer 106 was designed to maximize performance in a small, ultralight sit-on-top kayak. It was the lightest in the group, weighing just under 40 pounds. The Skimmer featured a comfortable performance mesh flip-up seat with several height adjustments for a customized fit. It also boasted the most dynamic hull design of the three, making it the fastest and most agile kayak in the lineup. Sitting low in the Skimmer keeps your center of gravity close to the water. It accommodates a wider range of paddlers with a 315-pound capacity. Remember, kayaks become less stable as your weight increases, so if you are significantly over 220 pounds, you might want to consider a larger option. However, if you're seeking a compact sit-on-top without sacrificing performance, this is the kayak for you.

Hurricane Osprey is the lightest and highest capacity sit on top in its class.

Small Kayak Huge Comfort| Osprey 109

The Osprey is the latest addition to the Sit on Top series from Hurricane Kayaks. While the Skimmer was designed for performance and speed, the Osprey focuses on Comfort and Stability. This kayak includes a higher seat, an open deck layout, and large buoyant edges to ensure maximum stability for novice paddlers. The removable seat allows you to handle just 43lbs at the end of a long paddle. The front deck area is ideal for bringing your paddling dog or storing a dry bag with a picnic lunch. However, this stability comes at the cost of some speed and performance, though the exact amount is difficult to determine. I plan to test all three of these kayaks on the water for a comparison review soon. As always, don't just take my word for it—come out and try it for yourself!
